16-year-old Rintaro Tsumugi’s “scary” appearance leads others to assume the worst in him. So beaten down by years of social ostracization, he internalizes these unwarranted expectations, resigning himself to a life of awkward repression. It doesn’t help that he’s a student at the rough, lower-class Chidori Public High School, a boys-only establishment with a poor academic reputation, whose pupils are disdained by the female students at the prestigious Kikyo Private Academy next door. When Rintaro meets the friendly, adorable, cake-loving Kikyo student Kaoruko Waguri at his family’s bakery, their gradually blossoming romance transcends social boundaries, helping both Rintaro and Kaoruko (plus their respective friends) to look beyond mere appearance and prejudices.
